Nanadankanan Zoological Park was established on 29th December, 1960. In the year 1979, two Demarkated Protected Forests (DPF) blocks Krishnanagar and Jujangarh along with Kanjia Lake, a natural water body and some private lands and Government wastelands over 437 ha were notified as Nandankanan Sanctuary. It is situated in between 20 0 23' 14'' to 20 0 23' 35'' North latitude and 85 0 49' 1'' to 85 0 50' East longitude along the South Eastern Railway's Kolkatta-Chennai line near Barang Railway station is in between the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar ( in Khurda district ). It is 17km from Cuttack and 20km from Bhubaneswar by road.

Visiting Days : The zoo is an all season destination. Visit the zoo in the rainy season for observing colonial nesting of water birds. In winter you can see the large crocodiles basking, and in summer you can enjoy the boating. It is opened six days a week, round the year. The zoo is closed on  Monday.

Lion and Tiger Safari

White tiger Safari - 12 ha
Lion Safari - 20 ha with a 3 km  road length.

The booking counter is situated opposite to the Reptile Park. Each visitor can purchase 2 tickets only. Children below 3 years free.
Timings : 10 AM, 11 AM, 12 AM, 2 PM, 3 PM, 4 PM

The diesel buses have been removed and in their places, the new Electrovan- Battery Operated Vehicle (BOV) have been pressed into service, as they are noise and pollution free. These buses operate from the Booking counter at Gate No. 1 with 12 to 14 visitors in one trip between 10am to 4pm.

Outside the zoo :

The state Botanical Garden is to the right of the entrance gate of the Zoo. It holds a special place for plant lovers with plants like hibiscus, brownie grandiceps, bougainvillea, dahlia, chrysanthemum. Some of the entities are the Mughal garden, Holiday cottage, Children's Park, Glass House, Japanese garden etc. Perfect place for love birds and nature lovers. It came into existence in the year 1963.
